As the weather turns colder, and winter approaches our thoughts turn towards snow and snow removal. So, if you plan to store your shovel away this winter and hire a snow removal firm, the Better Business Bureau Serving the Atlantic Provinces recommends the following.
Get several estimates. Prices can vary widely and are usually based on the amount of work, including the property size and layout, and costs for shoveling or snow blowing.
Ask the contractor if the quoted price is fixed for the season or if it will vary depending on the amount of snowfall.
Get a written contract. A company representative should come out to examine the property. Before you sign the contract, ask who will be responsible for damages should they occur. Make sure the contractor is insured and bonded. Is there a termination clause in the contract?
Find out the details of the contract. Do you know what you are getting? Are the walks and steps included? If the contractor has to come back is there an additional charge?
Ask for references and check them out.
Have realistic expectations. During a major snowstorm it may take longer for the contractor to reach your property.
